The World Food Programme Innovation Accelerator is one of the most exciting and impactful opportunities available to Nigerian innovators and entrepreneurs working to solve hunger and transform food systems in Nigeria and across Africa. Selected teams receive up to $100,000 in funding, 6 months of intensive support, and direct access to WFP field operations in 80 countries. About the WFP Innovation Accelerator The World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations agency mandated to fight hunger and achieve food security worldwide. WFP is the largest humanitarian organisation in the world and the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The WFP Innovation Accelerator was established at WFP headquarters in Munich, Germany to identify, support, and scale innovations that can help WFP deliver on its mission more effectively and help end hunger by 2030 — a key target of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. What the Accelerator Offers Selected Nigerian innovators receive a comprehensive package of support that includes up to $100,000 in non-equity funding to develop and test their innovation. Six months of intensive innovation sprint support at the WFP Innovation Accelerator in Munich including access to WFP innovation experts, data scientists, and procurement specialists. Introductions to WFP operations in 80 countries where your innovation can be tested and scaled. Mentorship from a global network of innovation and humanitarian experts. Connections to a community of impact investors, venture capitalists, and development finance institutions interested in food security innovations. Opportunities to present your innovation at WFP senior leadership events and the United Nations General Assembly. Priority Innovation Areas The WFP Innovation Accelerator particularly welcomes applications from Nigerian innovators with solutions in the following areas. Agricultural Technology — innovations that improve crop yields, reduce post-harvest losses, connect farmers to markets, provide agricultural advisory services, or make farming more productive and profitable for smallholder farmers in Nigeria. Food Supply Chain Innovation — technologies that reduce food spoilage, improve cold chain infrastructure, optimise food distribution, or make food supply chains more efficient and resilient. Digital Financial Services for Farmers — mobile money, digital lending, agricultural insurance, and other financial products designed specifically for smallholder farmers. Nutrition Technology — solutions that address malnutrition, improve access to nutritious foods, or help communities make better dietary choices. Climate-Smart Agriculture — innovations that help farmers adapt to climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, or use natural resources more sustainably. Who Should Apply The WFP Innovation Accelerator is open to Nigerian entrepreneurs, startups, social enterprises, NGOs, research institutions, and community-based organisations working on food security and hunger-related challenges. You do not need to have a large or established organisation to apply — many successful Accelerator participants were early-stage startups when they applied. What matters is the quality of your innovation, the evidence of its impact, and your team capacity to scale. Previous African Participants The WFP Innovation Accelerator has supported innovators from across Africa including Nigeria in areas ranging from solar-powered cold storage for farmers, mobile platforms connecting smallholder farmers to premium buyers, affordable fortified food products, and AI-powered crop disease detection tools. Several African innovations supported by the Accelerator have gone on to reach hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries.
